What is Reflexology ?
"The 'nerve impulse theory' proposes that stimulation applied to specific reflex points on the feet enhance nervous connection to the corresponding body parts [24].
This is currently the most promising theory and suggests that the benefits of reflexology may be brought about by modulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS).
The ANS regulates body systems that are under unconscious control such as breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure. These parameters are sensitive to stressors and fluctuate according to the physical or psychological changes experienced by an individual, via vagal modulation which controls calming and restful changes and regular functioning or sympathetic modulation, responsible for controlling arousal and the “fight or flight” response.
ANS modulation has also been supported by Hughes et al. [25] and Sliz et al. [26]. A commonly held belief, often cited by reflexologists and suggested by Poole et al. [27] and Tiran [28], states that reflexology may work by stimulating the release of endorphins and in this way may help to reduce pain and increase feelings of wellbeing and relaxation."

"Reflexology was first recorded as a pictograph on the Egyptian tomb of Ankhamor in 2330bc ... .
The Chinese classic, "The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine", which was written around 1000bc; has a chapter on "Examining the Foot Method" and is the beginning of discussions in print about the connections of life force and points and areas on the feet."

How Reflexology can Help You:
There are many ongoing clinical studies on Reflexology around the world(www.reflexology-research.com);
through these, we can begin to see the repeatable and recorded health benefits of this practice.
Did You Know That Each Foot Contains:
* 26 bones, 33 joints, more then 100 ligaments, muscles & tendons, and 125,000 sweat glands
* it is important to have proper cushioning & supportive shoes while walking, jogging, running, etc
- as the foot is subject to 2-3x your body weight at impact
"This technique, as I mentioned lines above, has also been widely effective for the treatment of patients with Parkinson's Disease, Neurological Dysfunction (a disease that severely affects control of movements and coordination), Bell's Palsy, Anosmia and even the recovery of brain function afterwards of coma induced by brain trauma and loss of the temporary lobe responsible among other things of speech."

"Methods of massage that successfully release trigger points include
ischemic compression(holding steady pressure on a point until it softens),
and friction massage(sliding the finger along the muscle, creating a vacuum effect upon the circulation & lymphatic systems).
They are creating a compression of the tissue that temporarily compromises the circulation. The blood responds to the compromise,
which strives towards equilibrium, by sending a "flush" of blood and lymph,
which contain endorphins,
which also flush out inflammatory chemicals,
and which also contain energy constituents or metabolic recovery for both the myofascial tissue and the neuromuscular junctions."

"The way you naturally place your feet is a good indicator
of what kinds of stress and strain the knees and hips are under.
...getting your feet - the literal foundation of your body - functioning correctly
will automatically improve the structural balance and function of the rest of the body...
They have one of the highest concentrations of nerve endings in the body,
and working on them can be a quick and powerful way to release tension throughout the body"
(Ann Frederick, Chris Frederick, "Stretch to Win" 2006)
"Stress removal is the first priority of Reflexology.
The careful stimulation of 73 nerve reflexes on the feet
activates a self-balancing parasympathetic response
within the body's nervous system."
(Prof.Bisson, Ontario College of Reflexology 2010)
"Reflexology reduces feelings of pain...
Researchers found that people felt about 40% less pain
and were able to withstand pain 45% longer;
in an University of Portsmouth PhD study.
As a complement to conventional drug therapy,
in the treatment of pain associated with osteoarthritis, backache and cancers"
(Dr.C.Samuel + Dr.Ebenezer, Dept.of Pharmacy & Biomedical Sciences, University of Portsmouth, UK 9Apr13)
"Research studies around the world indicate the positive effects of Reflexology,
indicating promise as an intervention to reduce pain, enhance relaxation and sleep,
reduce psychological symptoms, and the beneficial results in cancer palliation."
(Center of Spirituality & The Life Sciences Foundation, University of Minnesota, USA 30Oct13 + Ernst, Posadzki & Lee 2010
"Several studies funded by The National Cancer Institute and The National Institute of Health,
indicate that Reflexology may reduce pain and psychological symptoms, such as anxiety and depression,
and enhance relaxation and sleep. Studies also show that Reflexology may have benefits in palliative care for people with cancer"

"Touch can relieve pain, reduce blood pressure and stress hormones, and improve the immune system...
... as we experience touch, we focus on the feeling, warmth and relaxation it provides....
Any time we can refocus our mind to a relaxing place, it has a positive effect on the body."

* Steps for Healthy Feet:
- wash & inspect your feet daily
- dry your feet completely
- if you are using a foot cream/medication, make sure that it is fully absorbed before putting on clean, dry socks
- sanitize your flip flops/sandals/crocs/ insoles/orthotics on a regular basis
- incorporate foot/calf stretches and exercises into your daily routine
- make sure that you wear foot wear with proper support and cushioning, and are careful when walking barefoot
- if your feet hurt or are in discomfort in any way, for longer then a few days after a minor, acute foot injury - seek medical attention - your feet are an important part of your ongoing health, independence and mobility.
How Often should I have a treatment?
- for people looking to relax and rejuvenate, a recommendation of 1x/every 6weeks to 2months is given
- for people looking for maintainence, a recommendation of 1x/month is given
- for people with (minor) foot and/or health concerns, a recommendation of 3x, either for 3 consecutive weeks or once every 2 weeks is given, and then re-assessed
- for people with chronic/more serious concerns, a recommendation for 3-12 consecutive weeks or the Mayo Plan or the Lippincott Plan is given, and then re-assessed
(for well established chronic concerns, a single session is not sufficient to relieve issues that have developed over years)
*IMPORTANT NOTE* For any (potential) clients diagnosed with Deep Vein Thromboses, they must have a written ok from their MD/GP to receive a treatment from me, due to the possible serious contraindications. This also applies to those in pre/post surgery.
* For people with stiff/inflamed feet:
- a thorough treatment may produce tender fascia/ ligaments/ muscles/ nerves/ tendons/in the first while after the session
- until the this sensation in the feet calms down, it is recommended to relax afterwards(e.g: no driving/operating heavy machinery, alot of standing or sports, etc.),
and use the RICE method = Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation(as necessary), and to stay well hydrated.
- alternatively the Lymphatic Flush method may be used - alternating 1minute in warm water or on a warm flax/gel pack with 1min. in cool water or on a covered cold/frozen flax/gel pack - for a minimum of 10min.
